In 2012 America’s Hub World Tours is dedicating a part of its Portland City Tour to honor many African Americans key figures in the State of Oregon as it relates to their important, experiences, issues and historical contributions by African Americans.

Our intent over the next few years is to ensure the cultural diversity that exist in Portland and the surrounding is shared with all our visitors to the State of Oregon. Throughout the year AHWT- Portland City Tour will continue to expand to include Asia, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Spanish more information about cultural groups and their important in the State of Oregon.

Featured Event:

A significant number of African Americans migrated to Portland during World War II due to the availability of jobs in the shipyards. Housing was scarce for both African Americans and Anglos. After the war ended, approximately 10,000 of the 20,000-25,000 African Americans who migrated during the war remained in Portland. The majority of these families lived in the area known as Vanport—a temporary settlement for war workers and their families. The housing there was not meant to be permanent but it became so for many African American families. In 1948 the Columbia River flooded and the dike protecting Vanport broke. Nearly 17,000 people were left homeless as a result of the flood, and those left homeless were disproportionately African American.

After the flood many African Americans moved to the area that is now known as the Rose Quarter. This area was located between the downtown and the Eastside both of which were in the process of being developed. In November 1956 the decision was made to build a sports coliseum in the Rose Quarter. The city planning commission claimed that housing in the area was substandard. This was just one of several projects that forced many African Americans in the area to move once again

The African American community protested the expansion of Emanuel because they were frustrated at continually being forced to move to make way for development. Successive postwar construction projects in the Albina neighborhood—the Memorial Coliseum in the 1950s, Interstate 5 in the 1960s, and the Emanuel Hospital expansion in the 1970s—resulted in a steady migration northward.

Elk Mountain and King’s Mountain- two popular hiking destinations in the Oregon Coast range. Most of the trail is nice , but be prepared for a little more rugged and challenging experience than your typical Columbia Gorge or Mount Hood trails.

We started just past the Elk Creek Campground. The signs were easy to follow along, the trail. The trail goes up and down a bit over small knolls. As you go along the trail, there are progressively better views down to the road, toward King’s Mountain and the rest of the Coast Range.

There’s a large clearing and level area to enjoy the views and rest near the top. But, don’t rest to long because you have a long way to go and that’s were the fun begins.:)

Elk Mountain-King’s Mountain Loop Hike:
•Distance: 17.381 km10.8 miles round trip
•Elevation gain: 1,127.76 meters or 3700 feet
•Difficulty: ***Very Difficult***
•Seasons: I’m only suggesting summer or fall. Travel safe!
• Great training hike for climbers to judge their fitness level.

Hello friends!
I wanted to let you know what Matt and I are going to be up to this summer. We are starting a mobile restaurant that travels to different southern oregon farms and ranches and serves their seasonal bounty: 5 courses, local wineries, and live music. The farms and ranches we have selected are beautiful and their products are amazing as well. A portion of the proceeds will be donated for Farm to School and Friends of Family Farmers. We are trying to highlight local food and it’s farmers and provide an educational experience that our guests will hopefully be inspired and moved to support their local food growers in their daily lives. Check out our website and our video. I would LOVE to see you at one of our dinners this summer and we may also be doing this in the willamette valley/hood river area this fall! I will let you know. Hope you are doing well and starting to enjoy the summer!

Look what’s happening around Portland!

Opening streets, connecting our communities- without traffic!

Sunday Parkways are seven-eight mile “temporary parks” along city streets connecting neighborhoods and residents in Portland. Sunday Parkways started in 2008, modeled after the Ciclovias project in Bogota, Columbia which happens every Sunday to close 70 miles (!!) of streets for community activity. In 2008 there was just one event in Portland, but it was huge. So in 2009 we added two more events for a total of three Sunday Parkways. Again the response was overwhelming – and we’re excited to announce that this year there will be FIVE Sunday Parkways events!

New this year we’re adding events in East Portland and Northwest Portland – both of which have great routes and incredible community support. We can’t wait!

For more information about Sunday Parkways, see our website or call Janis McDonald at 503-823-5358.

PLAN FOR A FULL SUMMER OF FUN!
Plan to come to all five Sunday Parkways this summer – each one will have its own neighborhood flair with cultural groups, activities and restaurants fron the neighborhood. Sunday Parkways is a great way to get outside with your friends, neighbors and family to spend time in your own neighborhood – or explore other neighborhoods. If you’re reading this newsletter, chances are good that you’ve already been to a Sunday Parkways. So, this year, how about bringing someone along for a great day in Portland? Invite along a coworker, bring your neighbors, offer to chaperon kids from your neighborhood, invite your parents to town and hang out with friends.

Last year were were so impressed with the number of people who came out in groups to walk, stroll or roll along the open streets. What an exciting way to experience Portland!

Sunday Parkways has grown so much over the years and relies on the support of 300 volunteers per event. That’s why this year we’ve brought on the volunteer management experts Good Sport Promotion. Good Sport Promotion is a local event coordination company that specializes in organizing fundraising events for non-profit organizations. They’re most famous for their bicycle rides such as the Worst Day of the Year Ride, Reach the Beach and the Portland Century.

The staff at Good Sport Promotion are volunteer management specialists who love working with community members who volunteer their time. The company oversees events with 30,000+ participants annually, they work with a team of 1,200 volunteers throughout the year and raise $500,000 for non-profits through their events. Good Sport Promotion has been helping Sunday Parkways since year one – and we’re excited to have them fully on board for this year!

BE A SUNDAY PARKWAYS “SUPERHERO”
Volunteers are the life-blood of Portland Sunday Parkways. They do everything from mailings, distributing door hangers and lawn signs, stuffing packets, sweeping the routes, and much more. But we reserve our “Superheroes” title for those Sunday Parkways volunteers who help us monitor over 110 intersections along the route.

Superheroes (in addition to having a cool title) get a supply of chalk to decorate their own spot along the course, are lavished with snacks and water donated by some of our businesses sponsors, and make they sure that residents who live along the route can safely navigate to and from their homes.

Over the years we’ve seen our Superheroes do some pretty creative things, and they really enjoy their time volunteering with us. Volunteering on course is a unique way to get out and see the event, and be a part of something special. We hope you’ll join this year to see what all the fuss is rightly about. The world (and everyone who comes to Sunday Parkways) will thank you.

We welcome involvement from groups, clubs, churches, civic groups, student organizations and others who want to volunteer as a team. For more information, see the volunteer page or contact Neal Armstrong, Volunteer Coordinator: Neal @ GoodSportPromotion.com.
