WMA-Fort Vancouver & MuseumsTour

This tour will take you behind the scenes at Clark County Historical Museum and Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Clark County Historical Museum
The Clark County Historical Society opened the Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM) on May 24, 1964 inside Vancouver’s 1909 Carnegie Library. The museum building, listed on the National Historic Register of Places, is owned and maintained by the City of Vancouver. The Clark County Historical Society is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of the cultural history of Clark County and the Pacific Northwest, and to sponsoring educational programs and exhibits for the enrichment of all members of the public.

Fort Vancouver Cultural Resources and Interpretive staff will guide participants around Fort Vancouver, Pearson Air Museum, and, weather permitting, the Fort’s newly reconstructed employee village. Select artifacts from our museum collection and from recent excavations will be on display during a behind-the scenes tour.
Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is considered the premier historic archaeology site in the Pacific Northwest. The site’s unparalleled museum collection reflects this status; the park’s two million artifacts span American Indian, fur trade, and early military periods, and chronicle the region’s development from stone tool technology to modern industrial over the last two centuries.

The multicultural nature of the settlement is also reflected in the artifact collection, which highlights both the global trade networks on which it depended and the locally made articles that made the post sustainable. The archaeological resources are often the primary data used by the National Park Service for reconstructing and interpreting the site.

Welcome to Portland!
Fermenters International Trade Association

Portland City / Mt. Angel / Silver Falls / Oregon Hop Yards

Tour Highlights

Our guided tour will start the Portland City Tour, which introduces you to the City of Roses, guiding you popular and lesser known sites, with discussions of current events and local history. This tour includes the Pittock Mansion and the Portland Test Rose Garden.

We will continue to Mt. Angel which is located 18 miles northeast of Salem. Founded in the late 1800s by German settlers, this town has an Old World flavor which is heightened by the many Bavarian style storefronts and the beautiful Benedictine Abbey.

We will enjoy lunch in Mt. Angel. There you will have the opportunity to walk around and enjoy the historical district.

The tour continues with a drive to Silver Falls. The Canyon Trail is a nationally recognized trail system that leads hikers along the banks of the north and south forks of Silver Creek. The park includes 10 majestic waterfalls.

Our last stop before returning to Portland is in Hubbard, Oregon. Oregon is the second largest hop producer in the United States, and we'll tour the fields and properties of this important agricultural region.

Schedule:

9:00am Departure: Meet & Greet in hotel lobby for transportation

9:00am - 9:15am Pioneer Square

Pioneer Square is known locally as Portland’s "living room". With its central location and convergence of transit options, it is a popular meeting spot. History: First owner purchased the block in 1858 for $24 and a pair of boots and built a school. It was then developed into a hotel, later a parking structure for Meier and Frank and eventually, in 1974, purchased by the city for public use. To help with the cost of construction people sponsored bricks with their names inscribed.

9:15am - 9:45am Portland Rose Garden

In 1888, Georgiana Burton Pittock, wife of pioneer publisher Henry Pittock, invited her friends and neighbors to exhibit their roses in a tent set up in her garden. Thus began the annual rose show for Portland Rose Society, which has grown into an internationally recognized rose garden. Today there are over 550 varieties of roses on its 5.5 acres. There are many view points of the city and the Cascade Mountains Range.

10:00am - 10:30am Pittock Mansion

Built by Henry and Georgiana Pittock in 1914, this mansion overlooks the city and is a popular destination in Portland for local residents and visitors. Below the mansion you can view Nob Hill and the Pearl district, the Willamette River, and beyond to the mountains.

11:30am-1:00pm (Lunch) Mt. Angel Abbey

We will continue our tour with a visit to Mt. Angel Abbey in Mt. Angel, Oregon. This century old Benedictine monastic community was built in 1883 by Swiss Benedictine monks. The beautiful library, designed by Alvar Aalto, stores a priceless collection of illuminated manuscripts, and features a display of rare, hand printed books.

There will be a short stop for lunch in Mt. Angel before heading to Silver Falls.

1:30pm - 3:30pm Silver Falls State Park

The Friends of Silver Falls will arrange an interpreted walks in the park. We will select the 4 or 5 most popular falls for a short walk. Bring sensible footwear!

4:10pm - 4:45pm Oregon Hop Yards

Our final stop is in Hubbard, Oregon for a tour of Oregon Hop Yards and an interpreted tour of fields and production facilities.

4:45pm - 5:30pm Return to Portland

**Note: Reservation for lunch not included in tour price.

On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. The north face of this tall symmetrical mountain collapsed in a massive rock debris avalanche. Nearly 230 square miles of forest was blown down or buried beneath volcanic deposits. The eruption lasted 9 hours, but Mount St. Helens and the surrounding landscape were dramatically changed forever.

In 1982, the President and Congress created the 110,000-acre National Volcanic Monument for research, recreation, and education. Inside the Monument, the environment is left to respond naturally to the disturbance.

Join us on this all-day tour and learn about the blast zone, mud and pyroclastic flows, biological regeneration and the largest avalanche recorded by man.

Columbia River Gorge Waterfall Tour: While visiting Portland start your trip off with a Columbia River Gorge Waterfall Tour and enjoy a balanced introduction that includes popular attractions and hidden routes. The Columbia River Gorge Waterfall Tour will guide you through the Columbia Gorge National Scenic area, describing the history of this amazing area. Visit both National Park information centers in the Gorge, tour the renowned Multnomah Falls, and many other waterfalls along the way.

Every twist and turn brings new vistas, from majestic waterfalls such as Bridal Veil Falls and Multnomah Falls (the most visited natural site in Oregon), to astounding views from the tops of cliffs over 900 feet (274 m) above the river. The Historic Columbia River Highway was the first modern highway constructed in the Pacific Northwest and the first scenic highway in the United States.

9:00am - Departure

We start along the Historic Columbia River Highway National Scenic Byway, visiting Portland Women’s Forum, Crown Point Vista House, Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Multnomah Falls and Horse Tail Falls.

9:15am-9:30am - Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint

Soak in the breathtaking view of the Columbia River Gorge from the Portland Women's Forum National Scenic Viewpoint. With the scenic Vista House in the foreground and the wide expanse of the Columbia River in the background, this is one of the most popular places to take photographs of the Columbia Gorge.

9:45am-10:00am - Crown Point Vista House

Crown Point is the best known of the scenic lookouts along the Historic Columbia River Highway, providing a panoramic view of the Columbia River. The Crown Point Vista House was built in 1916 and refurbished in 2005, with its beautiful marble interior and brass fixtures completely remodeled.

10:15am-10:30am - Latourell Falls

Latourell Falls plunge 249 feet (76 m) over a massive wall of columnar basalt – some of the best formations in the Pacific Northwest – before cascading hastily towards the Columbia River. This waterfall is usually most recognized for the large patch of bright yellow lichen adorning the cliff face to the right of the falls, and this characteristic has led many famous photographers to give this location their treatment. And if you stand in just the right place, and look way up, behind the falls you see another falls!

11:00am-11:15am - Bridal Veil Falls

The Historic Columbia River Highway passes over Bridal Veil Falls on a bridge. From a parking lot on the highway, a winding footpath and another bridge lead to a vantage point for the falls. The falls consists of two cascades in quick succession along angling rock faces, so when there is good water flow, the falls looks very much like its bridal veil namesake. This waterfall is one of the best kept secrets in the Columbia River Gorge. People read about, but rarely get a chance to view the actual waterfall.

11:30am-11:45pm - Wahkeena Falls

Wahkeena ("most beautiful" in the Yakima language) (sometimes spelled Wah-kee-na) tumbles 242 feet in a cascading type of falls with 3 plunging falls. On up behind this falls is a cascade which flows a long way. . . and then you come to Fairy Falls.

12:00pm-12:30pm -Multnomah Falls

First, enjoy lunch while viewing Multnomah Falls at the lodge. Then set off to explore the wonder of Multnomah fall. Visit Multnomah Falls, the Information Center and Multnomah Lodge. Plummeting 620 feet (189 m) from its origins on Larch Mountain, Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. Nearly two million visitors a year come to see this ancient waterfall, making it Oregon’s number one public destination. Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies but is highest during winter and spring. Built in 1925 the Lodge provides fine Northwest cuisine with a panoramic view from your table.

12:40pm-12:45pm - Horse Tail Falls

12:45p.m. - Depart: Return to Portland:

Highlights: Downtown Sights, Pioneer Square, Portland Building/Portlandia, Governor Tom McCall Water Front Park, OMSI, Sellwood/Willamette Park, Rose Garden, Washington Park, Twilliger Viewpoints

 Detail Itinerary

Pioneer Square: Downtown central location considered as Portland’s Living room and most popular meeting spot for visitors and locals. There are various events held at the square (Lighting of Christmas Tree, national sand castle building competition, flower fair in spring, cultural fairs etc)

History of Square: First owner purchased the block in 1858 for $24 and a pair of boots and built a school. It was then developed into a hotel, later a parking structure for Meier and Frank and eventually, in 1974, purchased by the city for public use. To help with the cost of construction people could buy bricks with their names inscribed.

Portland Building & Portlandia: As we tour through the city we will point out of interest, Portland safe figures of the road and a short stop at Portland/ Portlandia. Portlandia is 35ft copper hammered statue only second largest to Statue of Liberty.

After viewing the statue we head along Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park as we enjoy views of the city, mountains, Saturday Market along the waterfront. Then we cross over the river to OMSI for a great view of the city.

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry: In the tradition of the Deutches Museum in Munich and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, this two-story museum contains hands-on exhibits in topics ranging from natural sciences to brainteasers, human development and lifestyle issues, technology and more.

From OSMI we will tour south along the River about three miles, then across the Sellwood Bridge. The views along the river are amazing throughout the ride.

Rose Garden Facts: Founded in 1917, Portland’s International Rose Test Garden is the oldest official, continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. In the beginning, even though World War I was raging in Europe, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland’s garden for testing and to keep the new hybrids safe from being destroyed by the bombing in Europe.

The primary purpose of the garden is to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties. There are over 5.5 acres, 10,000+ individual plants and 550 species.

Washington Park: One of Portland’s older parks (1871). Slowly developed from wilderness to a place for public use. This park consists of over 75 miles of trails and considered as one of the safest parks in the world. The Hoyt Arboretum a 187-acre living museum of trees and plants from all over the world is considered as one of the best hiking adventures in the park. Throughout the park you will find many species of plants, trees and spectacular viewpoints.

Enjoy views of the city while you travel back to downtown Portland. We always suggest our guest experience VOO DOO DONUTS before returning to their hotel.

Day 8 thru 10
Iguazu Falls, Argentina
You’ll enjoy a morning breakfast before being transported to the airport for your next flight to Iguassu falls. Upon arrival we will waste no time. Your tour guide will take you up close to feel, touch, smell the falls. They are situated right on the border between Brazil and Argentina. Our goal is to ensure you get a view from both sides. The Brazilian side offers a more panoramic view, while the Argentina side offers an up close view with walks along the tops of the falls, along the bottom of the falls and to the very edge of the back of Devil’s Throat.

Iguazu Falls: The falls are so powerful, breathtaking, moving and it will forever leave a memory etched in your soul. The Iguazu river basin extends over some 62,000 sq km. It receives the waters from about 30 rivers before reaching the falls. Here are 275 falls plunging over a cliff with an average drop of 300 feet to the river below. These falls are 60 feet higher than Niagara and about one and a half times as wide.

Devil’s Throat: The largest quantity of water passes through this part of Iguassu Falls. Named “Garganta del Diablo” (Spanish for “Devil’s Throat), this part of the Falls is very high; 80 meters (266 feet). You can get to within a few meters of Devil’s Throat by walking on the new catwalk (1.3 mile round trip).

National Park: We plan to visit a national park for hikes in the subtropical rainforest, which you will experience over 400 species of birds, members of the toucan family and over 100 species of buffer flies (http://www.ladatco.com/IGU-GATE.htm )

Day 11 thru 16
Brazil
Brazil occupies nearly half the continent of South America and is the fifth largest country in the world. The Atlantic Ocean runs along its entire eastern coast, where two-thirds of its population lives. The country’s primary language is Portuguese and the neighboring countries speak Spanish.

People are the essence of this country and while Brazil is home to a multitude of ethnic groups of varying economic status, there are some characteristics that everyone shares energy and passion for. Much of the life of any Brazilian revolves around family both immediate and extended. Brazilians are sun worshippers and love spending time at the beaches. They also enjoy music, dancing and celebrate with many fiestas. Carnaval is celebrated all over Brazil.

Iguassu, Brazil: We will adventure over to the other side of the falls to Brazil. The Brazilian side offers wide expansive panoramic vistas, looking across the river gorge. We will spend some time touring the national parks before departing to Rio De Janeiro.

Rio De Janerio: Rio De Janeiro is one the hottest destinations and very few places in the world match its hospitality and natural charm. Rio is brimming with color, sound, rhythm, and joy which make it synonymous with Carnaval, happiness, and beautiful people. Rio has music, nightlife, beaches, historical sites and a spirit all of its own.

Ecological Parks: Brazil has numerous varied ecosystems: the tropical forest in the Amazon, the stunted vegetation in the northeast, the Atlantic Forest in the southeast, the vast marsh lands of the Pantanal in the mid-west and the pampas in the south. These ecological parks allow for great viewing of various wildlife.

Day 17

You’ll enjoy a morning breakfast before being transported to the airport for your flight home. Remember to book your next vacation before boarding. If you need to depart early, arrangements can be made to accommodate your needs.

Itinerary

Day 1 thru 3
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Your tour guide will meet you at the Buenos Aires airport (EZE). The guide will check to ensure all necessary documents are obtained and baggage is gathered. You will then take go to the hotel and review your trip itinerary. Here you will experience a city that never sleeps. After dinner, take in a movie, sit at a bar or cafe until three, then head off for some dancing. For one of the hottest scene in town head to Plaza Serrano (in Palermo Viejo). You can enjoy time is sit in the middle of the square late at night and listen to the hum of the city as it comes to a rest. Your tour guide will be available for local tours sharing information on history, economy, government, and the culture of the local area. Also, your tour guide will be available to help with any questions and make recommendations to ensure you enjoy your experience.

Buenos Aires: The cobbled streets with faded architectural buildings offer a great atmosphere for shopping, talking world politics, and discussing fútbol (soccer). Buenos Aires has great tasting wine and cultural meals.

Dancing: Buenos Aires’ culture revolves around art heavily, more specifically, the art of dancing. Dancing is the one activity to master. Luckily the tango, flamenco, latin, salsa and folk dancing lessons are widely available (detail information will be made available for you). Tango classes are available just about everywhere—from youth hostels to dance academies to cultural centers to milongas (dance halls). Hub World Travel will also make available evening lessons at the hotel before you adventure out.

Exploring Buenos Aires: We want you to have time to explore this beautiful city. Your tour guide will be available to assist as needed with any directions or recommendations for places to adventure to. As you explore the grand facades of downtown admiring the wonderful old European buildings you will experience different aspects of life in Buenos Aires. Some of the cultural aspects you may come across are street vendors selling captivating art, the strong soccer followers, and historic representations of Buenos Aires in forms of architectural buildings.

Plaza Dorrego: This one of the oldest public spaces in the city, dating back to the 18th century. In 1930, coffee shops and bars surrounding the Plaza sprung up and it became an area for wine, song and dance, as it remains today. The market started in 1970, and it is still going strong with more than 270 stands offering antiques, photographs, clothes, jewelry, old books, craft items and other knickknacks. Argentine tango and folklore singers and dancers, and other performers, put on outdoor shows throughout the day. If you have no more than a casual interest in tango, then Plaza Dorrego is an excellent place to enjoy an introductory sampling of the dance.

Day 4 thru 7
Mar Del Plata, Argentina
We will travel north to Mar Del Plata. As we approach the city, we will have our first views of the spectacular ocean beaches. Here you will enjoy sightings of one of the best kept vacation secrets throughout the world. If there is one place Argentines choose to go on their summer vacations, Mar del Plata is here. Though many of the resorts once catered to the rich, Mar del Plata today rests firmly in the hands of the middle class.

Ocean Beaches: Arriving in Mar del Plata you will be welcomed by the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. Bird watching, horseback riding, walks and boat cruises encompasses a few popular activities to do here. Also, enjoy casinos and the nightlife. Remember that most discos and pubs don't open until midnight or after to accommodate the late dinner hour

Old Houses: Towards 1900, Mar del Plata was the leisure spot chosen by the Argentinean society aristocratic families to spend the summer. It was the buildings raised in those days the ones that defined the city architectural style.

Local Theaters: Mar del Plata is also the site of country's most important film festival, the Argentine version of Cannes.

Mar del Plata Aquarium: The local aquarium offers a wide range of marine attractions. Most popular attractions are the dolphin and seal shows. There are also penguins, tortoises, flamingos, many kinds of fish, and a cinema featuring 3D films.

Leisure & Fishing Cruises: From Mar del Plata's port you can embark on both fishing and leisure cruises through the surrounding sea. Pleasure cruises travel along some of the region's most dramatic coastline.

Ecology & Educational Farms: "La Piedra" and "La Pilarica" Laguna Sierra de los Padres Laguna Sierra is Mar del Plata's premier ecological reserve. This ecological reserve encompasses over 200 hectares of marshland and is ideal for bird watching.

Museums: There are two important public museums that reside in Mar del Plata: the Museo Municipal de Arte Juan Carlos Castagnino, and the Museo Archivo Historico Municipal. The art museum contains paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures and photographs by Mar de Plata artists and various masters of Argentine painting. There are also photographs of Castagnino.

Day 8
Punta Arenas
We will depart Mar Del Plata after breakfast and travel to Punta Arenas. There we plan to spend the night at Los Navegantes Hotel and enjoy some great wine and dinner. For those who want a little more adventure hiking or running, this will be available as an option during the day.

Fort Bulnes: This fort represents the first Chilean settlement in the southern part of the country and includes a jail, water well, post office and stables.

Punta Arenas: The city center of Punta Arenas is called Muñoz Gamero Square, dominated by the Monumento a Hernando de Magellan’s a beautiful statue erected in tribute to the discoverer of the strait.

Muñoz Gamero Square: Plaza Munoz Gamero (or Plaza de Armas) is the central square in Punta Arenas. It is surrounded by a couple of old impressive mansions, dating from the 19th century, which can be visited. On one side is the Cathedral of the city, the first brick building dating from 1892.

Day 9
Punta Arenas & Torres Del Paine
We will drive north through the Patagonian region. While in route stop for a break and lunch at the quaint town of Puerto Natales, situated on the shores of Seno Ultima Esperanza. Afterwards, we will continue our drive to Torres del Paine National Park. On the way you will see large herds of sheep and baqueanos (cowboys). As you approach the park along Laguna Amarga, we will have our first views of the spectacular granite Towers of Paine. It is likely we will also enjoy sightings of condors, flocks of pink flamingos, foxes, geese, ñandus (wild ostriches) and other wildlife. After entering the park, you will have a chance to get settled at refugio Torres. Upon arrival a short hike is available for those wishing too.

Day 10 thru 14
Torres Del Paine
We will begin our day with breakfast, and then you will have the option for a short hike, relaxation or a longer hike along the Ascencia Valley. We cross the river and continue uphill along a lenga and cypress trail. As we pass by campamento Chileno and the foot of Mt. Almirante Nieto, the trail follows a southern beech forest, finally reaching a moraine that takes us to the cirque below the famous Towers of Paine. This is considered a very difficult hike. People doing this hike must be physically fit for strenuous hiking. This hike allows for fast and slower hikers to enjoy equally. Upon returning to the hotel we will enjoy wine and other related treats.

The next morning we will explore our surroundings and hike along the northern shore of Lago Nordenskjold. The hike will take about 5-6 hours and lunch will be available. For those interested in the running option it is always available. I suggest a small pack because we will be staying overnight at the Refugio Cuenos.

We will hike west of Lago Scottsberg and follow a trail along rolling foothills arriving at the Italian camp. This hike will take about 4-5 hours in duration. You will have enjoyed some incredible view on the east and the glaciated Cerro Paine Grande on the west, as well as Lago Nordenskjold and Lago.

We will hike toward Lago Grey and Glacier Grey - a 4 mile wide glacier originating in the Continental Ice Cap. This hike will take 7 to 8 hours. As we hike along Lago Grey, we will see turquoise-colored icebergs blown to the opposite side of the lake by the strong winds. We will hike to Grey Glacier and enjoy the rest of the day back at the Paine Grande Mountain Lodge – Refugio in Pehoé.

We will take a catamaran across Lago Pehoé and arrive at Refugio Pudeto where our vehicle is waiting for us. As we drive to the park entrance, we will enjoy the best views of Lago Pehoé, Lago Nordenskjold and Lago Sarmiento as well as the Horns and Towers.

Day 15

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival to Quito from international flight
Welcome to Ecuador! Arrival from the USA, transfer to Patio Andaluz Hotel.

Day 2
Quito City tour, Middle of the World
With a privileged location, surrounded by beautiful valleys and spectacular mountains, Quito is close enough to the sky, you can nearly touch it. Quito shows it’s restored colonial district with splendid churches, plazas, galleries & museums. Undiminished by the passage of time and the ferocious forces of nature, Quito's historic center is the best preserved and least altered in all of Latin America, conserving the milieu of Colonial times with all its richness and diversity. This glorious historic centre is a maze of narrow streets lined with exquisite monasteries, churches and antiquated houses, all examples of the most beautiful colonial architecture on the continent. This unique, unequalled, inimitable historic centre undoubtedly deserves the Cultural Patrimony of Humanity, awarded to Quito by UNESCO in 1978.

Middle of the world Monument: a small scale replica of Colonial Quito built around the most representative monument that marks where the Equator crosses in South America. Step between both hemispheres surrounded by handicraft shops, restaurants & occasional shows in a very comforting atmosphere.

Day 3
Flight to Manta, visit to Tagua handicraft Factory, and Montecristi
Flight to Manta in the morning, arrival and transfer to Alandaluz Eco-lodge. On the way to Alandaluz you will visit a "Tagua" factory, also known as "vegetable Ivory" to see how talented crafters make decorative figures from these rare nuts. Another stop will be the city on Montecristi, worldly known for being the place of birth of the Panama Hat.

Day ends with the arrival and lodging at Alandaluz Eco lodge. Alandaluz is well-known throughout the world for its eco-tourist practices, which include: water recycling, constructions made out of natural materials (bio-architecture), 90% of the staff is from the Puerto Rico community (local employment), and community conservation education, among others. The lodge has also won two international prizes for best eco-tourism project, is recognized by the Ecuadorian Tourism Board as one of the two best eco-tourist lodges in Ecuador, and won the “Best Eco-lodge in the World” prize given by Lonely Planet in 2006. Lodging in ocean-front bungalows.

Day 4
Snorkeling, bird watching, beach relaxation, and hiking
The waves will greet you in the morning as you wake up in an ocean-front bungalow. Fruit salad with granola and yogurt accompanied with eggs, bread, jelly, coffee and toast make for a fulfilling breakfast before the day’s excursions. Next, we depart for Puerto Lopez, from where we will take a small yacht for snorkeling and discovering amazing beaches. During the late morning we will discover the great natural wonders of one of the most beautiful virgin beaches on the Ecuadorian coast, Los Frailes Beach, which lies within Machalilla National Park. Here we will hike, snorkel on coral reef & bathe in warm equatorial waters. It has been chosen by its visitors as the most beautiful beach in Ecuador. Surrounded by an untouched environment, this broad beach full with crystalline waters offers curious rocky formations, and walks through the dry forest. There is a lookout point from where you can appreciate the splendor of the area, the "Plata" Island, the small Island of Sucre, as well as the nearby beaches of "La Tortuguita", and "Playa Bonita". The diversity of the vegetation is admirable; it has desertic brushwood, typical thorny bushes, cactus, tuna, "muyuyo", "zapote de perro", "ceibo", Black wood, "algarrobo", Ebony, and Holly Stick. From the 259 bird species that this place has 61 are endemic. There are 100 species registered for the humid zone, between their main representatives we have falcons, hummingbirds, toucans, and woodpeckers. There are 81 registered species of mammals like: the white tailed deer, wild bores, "guanta" rodent, fruit bat & ocelot. Due to the dry semi-deserted climate, the amphibians and reptiles have not developed in a favorable way. There are only 24 recognized species of them. This beach is also frequently used for the nesting of four different species of marine turtles, all of them in danger of extinction. In "Los Frailes" the ecosystems are very complex. They are characterized between a high degree of interaction between the organisms that live stuck to the rocks and those that can move by their own means. The quality of the water, the nutrients, the type of substratum, and the temperature of the water are important factors for its development and growth.

We’ll later enjoy a bonfire on the beach after dinner.

Day 5
Canopy tour, organic farm, San Vicente Hot Springs, Guayaquil
Check-out from Alandaluz. During this day we will discover the hidden treasures of Cantalapiedra. Here you will participate in a canopy tour, and learn about traditional crops in the area. Cantalapiedra is a property with nearly 800 acres located on the north side of the Ayampe River and close to the South Occidental side of the Machalilla National Park. It has the most extensive forests of native bamboo of the Ayampe River basin. They are utilized with sustainable handling techniques. It also has areas of secondary forest with a process of recovery of over 30 years, and significant areas of a primary forest in process of conservation; a special sector known as "Cerro Llovido". A Reforestation Program is taking place and it has allowed the planting of over 40,000 plants of native forest species, and more than 2,000 native and exotic fruit plants. This has been possible thanks to the optimization of irrigation systems, and the re-utilization of gray and black waters through implementing integral recycling systems. This has raised the number of species of birds from two hundred to two hundred thirty in eleven years.

Another stop is San Vicente Native Spa, where you will be able to bathe in hot springs, get therapeutic volcanic mud on your skin for a natural revitalizing skin treatment & a great massage.

Arrival to Guayaquil at the end of the day, check in at Oro Verde Hotel.

Day 6 to 10
Galapagos
Hotel pick-up and transfer to the airport to board your flight. Arrival and transfer to Aida Maria Motor Yacht.

You’ll enjoy 5 days of touring the Galapagos Islands and experiencing all of the beauty it has to offer. You will be amazed and will have lifetime memories- we promise!

After cruise is over on day 10, Galapagos Airport drop off, flight to Guayaquil, airport pick-up, and transfer to Hotel Oro Verde

Day 11
Full day Guayaquil City Tour + Guayaquil Historic park
Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador now presents itself with the magnificent "Malecón 2000", a modern structure with museums, parks, restaurants, gardens, galleries, theaters, monuments and walkways to enjoy the refreshing breeze of the Guayas River. You will also visit the Iguana Park, "Las Peñas" Historical Neighborhood which has been recently renovated, Santa Ana Hill where you can have a panoramic view of the whole city, and a scenic tour of other areas downtown Guayaquil.

For lunch, we’ll enjoy a typical coastal Ecuadorian style lunch.

Guayaquil Historic Park joins important elements of our beloved city of the late 1800’s and 1900’s. The Refuge for Wildlife rescues important ecosystems such as mangroves, tropical dry forest and flooded savannas, characteristic of the region. In the Urban Rescue Area you find renovated buildings that were located in the downtown area dating from 100 years back. The Traditions Area displays the customs of the surroundings of Guayaquil back in time as well as traditional crops and medicinal plants.

Day 12
Travel from Guayaquil to Riobamba, visit to Andean Indigenous Farm.
The ride up to the Andes will help you understand the diversity of climates and wildlife in Ecuador, from its flooded coastal lands, to its snow-capped volcanoes near Riobamba. If the weather is clear, we might be able to see the all-mighty Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador at 20700 feet above sea level.

During the afternoon, we’ll visit an indigenous farm to learn about their daily life, beliefs, and farm activities.

We end the day by checking into Abraspungo Country Inn, right outside of Riobamba.

Day 13
Train on the Avenue of Volcanoes, Devil’s Nose, Ingapirca Ruins, and Cuenca
Transfer to train station. Our train to the town of Alausi departs at 7am from Riobamba. This unique train ride will take us on an unforgettable journey through the central Andes passing by snow-covered volcanoes, native villages & finally the Devil’s Nose, a famous mountain that is known for its incredible surroundings. What most people like is that the train goes relatively slow & is safely equipped to ride on top of the wagons, allowing an amazing view of the surrounding Andes.

At Alausi, we will be picked up and driven to Ingapirca, Ecuador’s most important archeological ruins that date back before Incan times. Here you will learn about the "children of the sun", as well as the people who inhabited these lands before the arrival of the Incas. Lunch is served at a nearby hacienda. The day ends at the most beautiful city in Ecuador, Cuenca!

Day 14
Cuenca Full day, flight to Quito.
Our day begins early with a Cuenca city tour, visiting the most outstanding sites. Walking around the central part of Cuenca is like going back in time. The colonial architecture of the city has been well maintained. A tour around the city of Cuenca visits the heart of the colonial city as well as an Inca wall which has been kept up since the 15th century and the best Panama Hat Factory. The surroundings of Cuenca are also very beautiful. The landscape is a bit less abrupt than that of the Northern Andes, but the rolling hills and the rivers are spectacular. This city is also known for its 52 colonial style catholic churches and cobblestone streets.

After the city tour we’ll check out of the hotel, transfer to the airport, and board the flight to Quito. Upon arrival, we’ll check-in at Patio Andaluz Hotel.

Day 15
Farewell, flight back to United States

Featured Restaurants

Bijou: Butter-yellow walls and heavy-handed, Spanish-inspired nude paintings mesh with green-and-blue checked tablecloths and a post-soccer game crowd. A whitewashed industrial ceiling and partially exposed kitchen frame a healthy gourmet menu in an unpretentious setting. Bijou offers traditional breakfast and lunch staples, but also features a daily changing menu with seasonal dishes and chef's specialties. Menu items include brioche French toast and the Bijou Burger, a 1/3-pound Painted Hills beef patty dressed up with spicy, sweet house-made jalapeno chutney.

Andina: A piazza-like layout brings the warmth of the open kitchen into the earth-toned dining room, its terra-cotta walls bedecked with vivid, indigenous art. A wall of windows provides prime people-watching, while a roaming guitarist adds an air of romance. The kitchen improves on traditional Peruvian dishes with fusion elements. There are several zesty seviches and dishes such as artichokes and asparagus in a "risotto" of creamy quinoa as well as a tender duck confit.

Mother's Bistro & Bar serves up slow-cooked food in the heart of downtown Portland. Featuring authentic cooking from mothers around the world, signature dishes include pot roast, meat loaf, chicken and dumplings and crab cakes, as well as featured dishes from a different mother each month. Everything is made from scratch using the best possible ingredients Oba is an award winning Nuevo Latino Cuisine featuring the flavors of Central and South America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. Oba's food showcases the vibrant flavors and rich textures of these cultures. Part South American marketplace, Mexican hacienda and Cuban plantation, Obais sensual, robust and lively. Oba welcomes all into a romantic Latin world where every guest is treated like family.

We believe that a healthy ocean is vital to human life and essential to ensuring the long term supply of seafood for all to enjoy.
